Course Description

This course is intended to give you a quick overview and answer your basic questions related to both online therapy and telemental health. You will be given a downloadable audio recording (MP3), and be given access to the accompanying video clips that augment a rich sampling of pages extracted from our other coursework. As a composite, this experience will introduce you to our multi-modal learning environment and more importantly, give you an idea of the issues involved with establishing an online or otherwise remote practice.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course participants will be able to:

  • Define online counseling and psychotherapy, telehealth, telemedicine and telemental health and what they have in common.
  • Discuss at least 1 legal concern related to HIPAA and online practice.
  • Explain whether or not it is legal to practice over state or national borders when conducting online therapy, counseling or any other form of telehealth.
  • Discuss at least 1 ethical concern to be addressed with online practice.
  • Discuss at least 1 issue related to reimbursement of insurance payments from insurance companies for online practice.

Topics

The Overview Course provides essential definitions, concepts, and state-of-the art perspective with respect to where we've been and where we're going with legal and ethical issues; practical ways of using basic technology (telephone, email and video); risk management tips and a reimbursement guide to help you understand how to profit from this rapidly expanding area of mental health care.
