FSMB Model Act Update

FSMB

The Federation of State Medical Boards has released an updated draft of its interstate compact for physician licensure that we outlined a few weeks ago in Physicians Set a Bold Example with New Model Act to Shape Professional Licensure Portability and More  and before that: Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) Releases Model Telemedicine Act, Sparking Considerable Discussion

In short, the FSMB’s updated draft compact would strengthen patient protections by:

  • Changing the specialty board certification requirements so that those professionals with time-unlimited certification also are eligible (FSMB release, 7/25);
  • Requiring that licensees undergo fingerprinting and biometric background checks to obtain licenses in multiple states; and
  • Requiring that licensees pass each part of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medicine Licensing Examination within three attempts.

FSMB President and CEO Humayun Chaudhry said, “The revised compact helps ensure that as the practice of telemedicine continues to expand, patient protection remains a top priority” (FierceHealthIT, 7/25).

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards is working on a similar model act for psychologists, but one that will allow a psychologist to be licensed in one state rather than requiring independent licensure in all states of practice. Give them your support!
