Have questions about the evidence-base supporting the use of telephone and videoconferencing in telehealth?
This 3-hour professional training program will help you take a deep-dive into the evidence-base to learn about the most successful telehealth models using telephone, video conferencing, and remote patient monitoring. You will also be exposed to a rich discussion of other issues to consider, such as the client’s/patient’s setting (such as the back seat of a cab, one’s living room with children underfoot, the back room of a bar, a jail cell, a nursing home, a locked mental health ward). Furthermore, you will be provided with specific technical issues to consider when purchasing your systems, such as when working with a couple in distress, you need a “multipoint system” to reach two parties in different locations at the same time.
Research related to individual treatment via telephones and videoconferencing are also examined, identifying and discussing findings or specific studies to help illuminate common assumptions and information gaps.
This course introduces the scientific research that has involved the use of telephones (including interactive voice response systems) and video conferencing technologies in telepsychology. The discussion starts with definitions of terms (i.e., synchronous and asynchronous, interoperability, convergence, camera resolution, production values) and explains why such issues are of relevance to psychological treatment via telephone or video. It then reviews a wide variety of research studies to help the trainee understand how and when to use which technology most effectively. It presents a number of examples of how clinical sessions can easily be interrupted by poorly considered technology and reviews the risks and benefits associated with different types of technologies. Issues of privacy and security are included. It explains how to deal with lights, cameras, and speakers, and how various clinical populations can best be treated with different combinations of technologies. It provides lists of questions to ask them when shopping for technology to use in telehealth practice.
At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:
- Identify at least 4 common mistakes made by clinicians using videoconferencing
- Outline at least 5 key questions to ask when shopping for a videoconferencing platform vendor
- Discuss why having a camera at eye level is important when videoconferencing with patients
- Access the power and interactivity of technology for learning (login is required)
