1. What is telemental health? How is it different from telebehavioral health?

Telebehavioral health is the practice of behavioral health using a telecommunications system to provide clinical services, professional training, administrative and other services at geographically separate sites. Service can be delivered in “real-time” using the telephone, interactive video conferencing, or through “store and forward” which relies on the transmission of images and data for review at a later time. Telebehavioral health can also involve email, text messaging and a wide range of other software applications to facilitate access and data transfer. Devices can run from desktop computers on carts in hospital settings to smart devices such as tablets and smartphones. Telebehavioral health can also include storage services on the “cloud” and everything in between.

An older term for this service is “telemental health.” This older term has been replaced with “telebehavioral health” by the US Federal Office of Health and Human Services (HHS) to refer to the telehealth services delivered to the combination of substance use and mental health clients and patients. The new term is an attempt to de-pathologize and de-stigmatize health care for people struggling with any one of these disorders. Therefore, the former TeleMental Health Institute has now followed the lead of HHS and is transitioning to the term “telebehavioral health” in both its training and its company name, which is now: Telebehavioral Health Institute (TBHI). Many other terms are also used, including teletherapy and telepsych. Completing the training will require approximately the same number of training time as CME or CE hours offered with each course. A 6-hour course then will take about 6 hours to complete, depending on how quickly you read. A one-hour course typically involves approximately 10,000 words, minus the words involved with presenting audio and video segments. The course evaluation and post-test will require that you come back into the website to respond to a series of questions. Post-tests need to be passed with a grade of 80% or better to get the course completion certificate. (Passing should be no problem. 9. Do you offer Continuing Education or Continuing Medical Education?

While it is not mandatory that you earn CE or CME hours to take our training, many professionals are required to have CE or CME hours for their licensure. How Do I Get Help With the TBHI Website?

11. When is TBHI's customer service team available?

Whenever a question arises, just send an email below. It will be held until our staff comes in for the next shift. If you need help with a particular course, please be sure to mention the name of the course and supply us with your phone number in case your email address is non-responsive (this happens more often than you might imagine). Our staff is available to answer your questions, change your login, or help you with any other issues. We are also available Monday – Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Pacific time, by email, live chat or telephone appointment. The TBHI training materials are written in Arial font to facilitate reading with appropriate alt tags for those who prefer or cannot see images. All audio and video recordings are produced with captions for deaf and hard of hearing trainees. PDF’s of all training are available for individuals who prefer to print and read training offline. Accommodations have successfully been developed for individual trainees with more specialized needs upon request. They will be considered on a case by case basis.

16. What do I do if I have a problem with my training?

If anything is amiss, please write to below immediately. We have dedicated staff to help you resolve any questions or issues. For example, if you need someone to walk you through our online programming, we are happy to call you by telephone to explain where you may need to click while you are on your computer. Once through a few of our pages, you will most likely be like our other Trainees and come to understand the logic and convenience of an online, distance learning platform. By the way, we’ve had successful Trainees in their 90’s use our system.

Refunds are available for any course within 30 days of purchase if you are dissatisfied for any reason. However, there will be a $25 refund fee. 23. How computer savvy are your average trainees?

A basic understanding of your computer and how to navigate the internet is all you need to get started. Our courses are set up to be user-friendly, and our support staff will help you if you find you need assistance with our online training facility.

24. What are the completion requirements for the TBHI Certificate Programs?

We have three versions of our Certificate Program: Level I, Level II and All Access Pass. Each Certificate Program is comprised of individual courses. Within each course, you will be required to complete the required reading, post-test, course evaluation, and print the course completion certificate. After completion of all your courses included in your Certificate Program, we will need to conduct a “Completion Audit ” to give you a final certificate, badges, and a formal listing on our website for your clients/patients to verify your certificate with TBHI. If you purchased the TBHI training with a payment plan, your account needs to be paid in full prior to receiving your TBHI Certificate and accompanying materials. 25. Which TBHI Certificate is best for my needs?

The Level I Certificate training is best for you if you work within an agency setting that is already organized to legally and ethically practice telebehavioral health. Your technology has been chosen, vetted, and installed by professionals and perhaps even your agency’s Information Technology (IT) staff. Your legal office has approved a full informed consent process and document for working with clients and patients. Your clinical staff has developed a well-defined emergency plan based on local community resources and an integrated response system is in place if an emergency arises at the client/patient site. Your supervisors know what might go wrong and contingency plans are in place. Your malpractice carrier is on board and you have the appropriate malpractice policy in place. Your billing staff already knows the appropriate telebehavioral health billing codes, place of service designations and telehealth modifiers. You just need some basic legal, ethical and clinical information about how to think about what has been organized for you. You will benefit from the fundamentals as to help you think through the issues to see the bigger clinical picture and how it all ties together into delivering responsible, professional care.

The Level II Certificate training is best for you if you need to do all the above on your own, without an IT department, legal office, billing staff or clinical staff or supervisors to help you think through the issues. The Level II program will help you choose your technology, decide whether or not to use videoconferencing, email, text messaging and other technologies; set up your virtual office and clinical protocols to follow current telepractice guidelines and learn how to get paid for your services.

26. Can I start with Level I Certificate Program, then change it later?

Absolutely. To make changes to your training package, please contact us. Behind the scenes, changing your training program requires staff time and supervision. An administrative fee of $45 will be charged for the implementation of changes after an initial purchase (excluding webinars).

27. Which title will I earn when I complete the TBHI Certificate Program?

Earn your certificate as a Board Certified Telehealth Professional Level II *. This designation** is increasingly used to recognize our graduates for having completed the most comprehensive and research-based post-graduate training program available anywhere today.

**Fees for this credential are included in the fee for your TBHI training. Testing for the credential is accomplished by passing each course’s post-test with a grade of 80% or higher. Post-tests can be taken as many times as needed within the paid access period. Extended access periods are available with a modest fee. This credential is valid for 3 years and requires annual renewal for a fee of $40 per year. Annual renewal requires an additional 3 hours of training from the Telebehavioral Health Institute. Once credentialed, your name and credentials (Level I or Level II) will be made available through a trademarked search engine, and you will be eligible to have your name and profile added to TBHI’s Professional Directory at no additional cost for 1 year.

28. How do I get my certificate?

After completing the courses required for the Certificate Programs: Level I, Level II and All Access Pass, send us a request to manually verify your certificate completion. 31. How do I get my CE or CME Hours?

Once you have completed the coursework including the required reading, course evaluation, and post-test, you can print your course certificate by choosing the ‘Course Certificate’ option in the navigation menu. Please note, the certificate will print your name as listed in your training account. It is recommended that you check your name in your profile prior to printing your certificate.

We are organized as an LLC in California, despite the many tax burdens placed on small businesses by CA. In other words, we walk our talk about compliance.
  7. Liability Insurance. TBHI carries liability insurance from Llyods of London. By choosing to protect itself, your program as well as your course records with the best of the best liability protections available for digital liabilities, TBHI will be standing for a long time. You can count on us to be here if your licensing board or a civil court wants to examine your records.
  8. CMEs and CEs. TBHI has passed muster with medical continuing medical education as well as continuing education for physicians, osteopathic physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists and addictions specialists. Professionals today are expected to be interprofessional. TBHI has led the march to be approved by all these professional groups – and has successfully maintained its formal approval by all such groups. TBHI’s CME and CE programs are unaffiliated with any groups who may exert competing agendas. (Who has approved our competitor? Do they have a breadth of experience in becoming approved by several different CME medical and non-medical CE approval bodies? Have they withstood the test of time, or is their approval still new? Are they affiliated with a group that has potential conflicts of interest?)
  9. CMS Software. TBHI courses are set up to be user-friendly using state-of-the-art software to make it easy. Multi-media learning experiences keep you interested and engaged. A basic understanding of your computer and how to navigate the internet is all you need. (Many TBHI competitors will simply send you a dry PDF to read. PDFs are available at TBHI as well, but there’s a lot more available if you want to really learn, too.) Once completed, all your course completion certificates are digitally generated with a unique identifier code by our software, which cannot be altered. Upon subpoena then, we can retrieve any of your records without a problem. We also house our Digital Learning Center on a dedicated server, which means that it does not share digital space with any other company. Again, your records are much safer within our firewalls. (Ask our competitors about their digital setup — and see if you get a succinct, understandable response.)
  10. International and Inclusive. TBHI is an international, interprofessional organization that has trained professionals with a variety of settings, orientations, abilities, and designations. For instance, some of our Learners have been deaf or hard-of-hearing. Some are well into their 90’s. Some use adaptive devices because of limited vision. Many speak English as a second language. Given that we serve Learners from 76 countries, we are developed by professionals with international awarenesses and sensitivities. While we often describe United State’s law to explain core issues, our international community appreciates that our examples are inclusive of other countries. For example, our Canadian colleagues recognize and comment on the fact that we often describe Canadian laws such as PIPEDA when discussing privacy. (Look at our competitor’s market?   11. Monthly Group Consultation. Rather than simply forwarding dry PDF files for you to read, TBHI faculty is available to address your specific questions about any aspect of telehealth – every month. With Level II training, you can join a small group on a monthly group teleconsult to rub digital shoulders with like-minded colleagues. Bring all your questions to have our faculty quickly and easily unlock answers to questions that may take you weeks to research on your own.
