Clinicians considering telepractice often want to know which video platform to use. Issues such as population served (children, adults or geriatric groups are often not reflected in their questioning. Newbie telepractitioners often also don’t consider pivotal issues such as the client’s/patient’s setting (such as the back seat of a cab, one’s living room with children underfoot, the back room of a bar, a jail cell, a nursing home, a locked mental health ward).Furthermore, they may not realize that when working with a couple in distress, they need a “multipoint system” to reach two parties in different locations at the same time.
Not only do many clinicians fail know how to select the right technology for their practices, they often also do not know how to optimize the clinical use of the technology they choose. They fumble with their technology, impart a less than professional impression to their clients/patients and waste previous clinical time with faulty assumptions about how to use technology for issues related to intake, assessment, screening, note-taking and termination.
This course reviews key technologies and outlines the key issues involved: type of technology with a primary focus on telephones and videoconferencing. Topics include how to think about screen size, screen resolution, speakers, monitors, a variety of peripheral devices. Research related to individual treatment via telephones and video conferencing are also examined, identifying and discussing findings or specific studies to help illuminate common assumptions and information gaps. This course offers practical know-how for setting up and managing your online practice.
