Go Back101C – Overview of Online Counseling, Psychotherapy & Telemental Health

3 CE Hours
CMEs only available as part of the Certificate Program. See details here.

Course Description

This course is intended to give you a quick overview and answer your basic questions related to both online therapy and telemental health. The most significant training competencies are covered briefly: competency, licensing, informed consent, security and privacy ala HIPAA and HiTECH Act, state law, client/patient education, documentation, mandated reporting, and reimbursement. You will be given access to the audio recording (MP3), which is rich sampling of pages extracted from our other coursework. As a composite, this experience will introduce you to our multi-modal learning environment and more importantly, give you an idea of the main legal and ethical issues involved with establishing an online or otherwise remote practice.

Course Objectives

  • Define online counseling and psychotherapy, telehealth, telemedicine and telemental health and what they have in common
  • Discuss at least 1 legal concern related to HIPAA and online practice
  • Explain whether or not it is legal to practice over state or national borders when conducting online therapy, counseling or any other form of telehealth
  • Discuss at least 1 ethical concern to be addressed with online practice

The Overview Course provides essential definitions, concepts, and state-of-the art perspective with respect to where we’ve been and where we’re going with legal and ethical issues; practical ways of using basic technology (telephone, email and video); risk management tips and a reimbursement guide to help you understand how to profit from this rapidly expanding area of mental health care.
