Evidence-Based & Practical Telesupervision Digital Workshop

This course qualifies for 3 LIVE, INTERACTIVE Legal & Ethical CME/CE Hours

Course Description

Telesupervision has evolved into a rich and exciting world during COVID. The telebehavioral Health Institute (TBHI) is on-point and ready to bring you this updated program to get you caught up with the latest scientific evidence-base to refine your skills. This new learning adventure will expose you to the latest protocols and field-tested strategies to reach your supervises. it will expose you to the evidence base that underpins the changing state laws allowing telesupervision hours to count toward licensure, and help you document your experiences in ways that manage risk. This live, interactive training with allow you to learn by doing, that is, learn by actively participating in a digital group experience to learn about new ways of engaging your supervises. This training is offered 100% online,  accessible from your computer in the comfort of your home or office.

Training of the Telebehavioral Health Supervisor – States requiring telesupervision training such as Georgia mandate, prior to the delivery of supervision via telemental health, that the supervisor has obtained a minimum of nine (9) hours of continuing education. The continuing education hours may include the basic six (6) hours of telemental health training (see it described here) AND an additional three (3) hours of specialized training to understand the key components necessary to supervise effective, and efficient delivery of telemental health.

Topics covered by TBHI’s exclusive, evidence-based telesupervision course include (click on titles below to see details):

Proper informed consent must be obtained from both the client/patient and supervisee for telemental health technology to be used in supervision. Some states or provinces may have additional mandates, such as mandated reporting, prior to the delivery of telemental health services by a licensee via technology, that the telesupervisee inform the client/patient which technology will be used. The licensee may need to obtain verbal and written consent from the client/patient for all such use of technology. The telesupervisory agreement must also reflect telesupervision competencies that have been promulgated by leading professional associations. There is no room for guesswork. This TBHI Telesupervision course cites relevant documents to explain such competencies, and help the telesupervisor develop their own agreement, based on specific needs of the telesupervisor and telesupervisee. Given the complexities and wide variance between telemental health settings, populations, and types of interventions in behavioral healthcare, this TBHI course optimizes the accuracy of the telesupervision contract by asking the telesupervisor a detailed series of questions to help the telesupervisor easily and quickly decide which issues to address in their own telesupervision contract.
Deciding who is appropriate to be assessed and treated at a distance is a challenge for even the best of clinicians. Conducting assessments, assuring standardized assessment administrations, responsibly giving assessment results and handling potential agitation on the part of distance clients/patients upon receipt of results – these sophisticated skills are addressed. Issues such as equipment failure, equipment inadequacy, unfortunate delays and careful documentation must all be considered by the telesupervisor. They need to not only master related skills themselves, but also help their telesupervisees learn how to tell the difference between acting professionally — and when to abort the attempt. Handling failed assessment attempts or referring a client/patient to a local provider who may be even less skilled than the telesupervisee both require finesse and solid clinical judgement. This course will examine these issues and the strategies used by many telesupervisors to handle these situations as documented by the evidence base. It will also cover how to handle emergency situations as a telesupervisor.
Ethical codes can be complex, especially when state law contradicts the ethics code. To make matters worse, many ethical codes are incomplete in their statements about telesupervision. This course will help the telesupervisor make sense of such issues to guide telesupervisees by using the simplest yet most accurate analogies and examples. Ethical codes from all major behavioral health associations will be included (NJAOPS, APA, ACA, NASW, AAMFT, NADAAC).
Understanding the fundamental concepts underlying “scope of practice” language is of particular importance when practicing, and even more so when supervising across jurisdictions. This course will expose the supervisor to information about underlying theory with scope of practice issues to facilitate broad application of these concepts to various telesupervisory situations.
Licensees offering telemental health services over national, state and provincial borders need to be educated about relevant issues, including how to most easily check with all jurisdictional boards involved. For instance, for many states, inter-jurisdictional law doesn’t just involve the state where the client/patient legally resides. Since these laws can differ substantially across jurisdictions, telesupervisors need to fully understand the potential issues and prepare for jurisdictional differences in requirements. This course will provide the opportunity for the telesupervisor to grasp a few quick, easy and common-sense approaches to obtaining all needed information prior to patient treatment, so as to be ready for situations where jurisdictions require full licensure, even when those requirements go beyond the need to be licensed where the patient resides, but also where the patient is at the time of each and every contact, possibly in yet a third state. (These situations arise regularly with patients who travel to care for elderly parents who live in other regions, for example.)
Students and licensees will need to understand how to set up their technology-based businesses for telepractice. This course will provide up-to-date information about basic as well as strategic issues for telemental health practice. It will cover technology decisions, professional liability insurance, professional affiliations and resources, and creative income development approaches. It will outline practical approaches to handling Internet-related problems that might arise not only for the client, but also for the supervisor, such as how to deal with disgruntled clients/patients and supervisees who post harsh or critical reviews of the supervisor’s work on Yelp, Healthgrades or other professional review websites.

Post-test need to be passed with a grade of 80% or better to get the course completion certificate. (You will have learned a lot, and passing should be no problem. Of more than 8,600 trainees that have come through our doors, only three needed help with post-tests.)

If your client/patient doesn’t show for their appointment, you can easily engage with your materials online, or in printed form.  Printed training materials are available upon request in PDF format to conveniently travel with you on a plane, train, bus or simply as you lounge in your living room.
